I CELEBRATE YOU SIS

The last birth broke mama, she was sad for weeks, she had raised her hopes up that this was it, this time she was going to give him another Son and not a Dog( Guogi) as he called us girls. She had shopped the clothes, all blue, that is how high her confidence was, but it was not to be and something broke inside her. So when she got pregnant four years later, we all were surprised and said oops.

The verbal abuse did not let up, instead it picked up and it was constant, how this pregnancy was not his but probably the driver or the workers at the station. It was relentless, day in day out but on this day it got back to physical, he had to just lay those hands on her, it had been too long. It was late in the evening and they were arguing outside on the balcony and as usual I had learnt to be on standby just in case, whatever the case might be. She was almost due, trying to calm herself down and then he pushed her down the stairs, lots of stairs and I could not breathe. I was scared shitless and prayed that both her and the baby were okay.

So I ran as fast as my little ten year old legs could carry me, and helped her up, back up the stairs onto the wicker chair that was on the balcony. Her eyes were scary white and glazed over as she rubbed her pregnant belly. Should I call for help i asked? She said no and ordered me to go to bed. She had the baby weeks later. She lived, her brilliant, tenacious, resilient self and I love her to bits. This August, I celebrate her as she reaches that age when she gets to be the same age as Mum when she had her. I watch in awe as she continues to live her life unapologetically, true to herself and her values. Out of trauma, came a beautiful soul. Soar little sis, Soar. x
